Platymooing around Comboyne

Following the platypus gypsy life I again ventured to a new town I hadnt seen before, the small town of Comboyne NSW.  Comboyne is located in beautiful Birpai country just southwest of Port Macquarie.  Comboyne is believed to be named after the Birpai First Nations word cunboyne meaning "female kangaroo".  My reason for visiting was to see the wonderful mural and mosaic. The mural and mosaic are on the side of the general store in Comboyne which is a small grocery shop, post office and petrol station and the lifeline of the community.

The mural was created  created by local artist Tertius and depicts the history of the Comboyne Plateau. The Mosaic was created by Guy Crossley, local school children, Skye, Tertius and the mosaic platypus was created by Kate Robinson. Sadly the mural and mosaic are in need of repair as they date back to 2003 and have been weathered.  The mural and mosaic display local fauna in the area such as  kangaroos, superb fairy wren,  lyrebird, eastern long neck turtle, platypus, frogs, swamp hen, lace monitor, fish and insects.

The small town of Comboyne features local attractions such as Ellenborough Falls, Boorganna Nature Reserve and Bridal Veil Falls Flora Reserve taking in the beautiful scenery of the Comboyne plateau. Traditionally Comboyne has a history of timber and dairy and the community and information centre in town features a model cow outside which is great for photos.

The telegraph poles are also painted with native fauna and flora as well as images featuring local agriculture such as dairy and avocados.

The coffee hangar cafe is a good place to get coffee and food on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, the general store in main street also has a take away shop which is open Monday to Friday.  The Udder cafe use to be a hallmark of Comboyne however recently it closed but hopefully as it is on the market someone will open it again.

Another recommended place to visit is the Old church gallery located at 1 Thone St Comboyne just a short walk from the main street of town. Although the gallery is now closed you can still visit the gallery in the garden and see the beautiful outdoor ceramic sculptures and hanging sculptures created by local artist  Zygy Barratt (more info on their art here Zygy Barratt website and Zygy Barratt facebook )

I'd highly recommend staying at the lovely bed and breakfast Windrush B&B just a short drive out of town, it features a beautiful garden and the hosts offer local knowledge on attractions and provide delicious food.  Comboyne offers small town country charm and stunning scenic views it is well worth a visit.
