Beautiful Biripi Bobin
My next adventure took me to the lovely small country town of Bobin located in the Mid North Coast of New South Wales Australia. Bobin is located within Biripi Country. My reason for traveling to Bobin was to see the stunning murals around the town created by local artist Peter Schouten. The terrible bush fires back in 2019 sadly destroyed parts of Bobin including the local school. However the community was strong and has started to rebuild the town including the new school building that has been decorated with native fauna celebrating the wildlife within the region such as the platypus and the Manning River Turtle.
More wonderful murals are featured on the walls of the school such as a colourful decorated wildlife scenery features echidna, possum, magpies and superb fairy wren. Another mural is on the basketball court and features platypuses, local birds, koalas and turtles. This mural was created by students and local artist Jo Ernst.
More stunning murals are located around the Bobin School of Arts the local community hall that locals come to gather for events. The two murals were created by local school children as well as Peter Schouten.
Another highlight is a beautifully decorated water tank with native birds the glossy black cockatoo and king parrot located near Bobin Public school.
Bobin country side was beautiful and green when I arrived due to the recent rain. The Bobin creek was also quite full. Local attractions in the area include the Jimmy Governor Plaque. Jimmy Governor was an Indigenous Australian who was charged along with Jack Underwood for the Breelong murders (more information here). Jimmy Governor was an honest man and hardworking known for being a police tracker and for constructing fences for farms. It is believed that his reason for the murders were the harmful and cruel treatment of his wife and him by the Mawbey family members taunting his wife Ethel because she married an Indigenous man, as well as not paying the full amount of money and food agreed on for the job. Sadly Jimmy Governor was captured around Bobin creek on October 27 1901 a plaque marks the place of his capture. I was unable to see the plaque as the creek water was too high on the road to the plaque but below is an image of the plaque. Jimmy was sadly sentenced to death for his crimes, his legacy however was survived by the son and daughter from his marriage to Ethel. It is sad to say but I'm sure if racism towards Jimmy and his wife didn't occur then he would not have committed the murders. Here is a good book written about Jimmy's life and here too.

Bobin is a lovely small town I only spent a few hours there because I was staying in nearby Wingham due to not much public transport within Bobin but I loved seeing the country side.
