Walking along in Warrawong

Blue skies returned again so I embarked out on my way to Warrawong located in Dharawal  country, within the Illawarra region of New South Wales.  I went to see the wonderful mural located in the park across from Warrawong Community Centre located at 9 Greene St, Warrawong. The mural was created by artists from Coomaditchie United Aboriginal Corperation and members of the community. It features images depicting the Warrawong community, people, cultures and the natural environment.

Other lovely murals and mosaics feature on the walls of the Warrawong Community Centre. They too show a mix of nature, community and cultures.  It was created by Kathryn Orton and members of the community.

There is also a cool mural on the building beside the Warrawong community centre painted by artists Jyi Westaway and Simon Grant and local youth from Wollongong Youth Services.

Another beautiful place to visit is the Coomaditchie (Coomaditchy) Lagoon. It is filled with wonderful bird life and a trail called Ngaraba-aan which features lovely local indigenous art of totem poles and mosaics from artists of the Coomaditchie United Aboriginal Corporation. The lagoon is significant to the local Indigenous community as it was close to the site of the Hill 60 mission. It is also an important site for connection to dreaming and sharing culture.  Read more about the history of the site around the lagoon here.

The CBD of Warrawong also has a few cool murals with one located above the local Gala Twin Cinema at 204 Cowper Street. The mural was painted by Thomas Jackson whole uses native fauna in particular birds often within his murals. It features native animals such as a red capped robin and a black swan. The other mural is located on the front of the local pet store at 74 King Street. This was painted by Grace and Stone Signs.  It features a bearded dragon, gouldian finch, python, budgies, clown fish and discus fish.

Warrawong is a great place to visit for art, nature and culture.
