Kolourful Kew

Celebration of Culture and Nature

A stunning mural is located on the underpass bike path below the Chandler highway bridge in Kew Victoria Australia. Kew is located on the lands of the Wurundjeri people the traditional owners of the land. The mural was created by local artists Tom Civil  (instragram: thomascivilian) and Ash Firebace (instagram: firebrace_1987) in 2019.  The mural tells the creation story of the of the Yarra River (known as Birrarung in local First Nations language) told by William Barak (ngurungaeta (Elder) and artist of the Wurundjeri-willam clan 1823-1903).  It features native flora and fauna including: Platypus, Lace monitor, Kookaburra, Cockatoo, fruit bats, koala, echidna, gecko, wattle, Wedge tailed eagle (Bunjil), Dingo and a lyrebird.  It was a rainy day when I went to visit the mural but the beautiful colours brightened up my day.  Below is the plaque of the creation story as told by Barak.

Final Thoughts

The mural is a must to visit, I didnt get to walk the Main Yarra trail the pedestrian and bike track pathway that follows the Yarra River due to the bad weather but I'd like try it next time I visit. Find out more about the Main Yarra Trail here and here
