Platypuses and Pineapples in Nambour

Nambaa

Nambour is called the heart of the Sunshine coast as it is situated within the centre of the Sunshine coast region of Queensland Australia. Nambaa is the Gubbi Gubbi (Kabi Kabi) (the traditional owners of the land) word for the Australian native plant the bottle brush Callistemon viminalis which the town is named after. The town is known for it's Sugar cane agricultural history.

The Big Macadamia Nut is located next door to the Big Pineapple and is now part of the Big Pineapple tree top walk. Check out the website here.

Interesting Tidbits

Nambour is home to some famous Australia celebrities. Most notably are writer and journalist Benjamin Law, Australian record producer and songwriter Michael Chapman, First Nations Filmmaker Ivan Sen and actor and illustrator Sam Cotton, all of which grew up or were born in Nambour.

Nambour is also said to be the UFO capital of Australia and sightings as far back as 1932 have been recorded, you can read the account of the 1932 sighting here which was retold by the man in 1974 which he witnessed as a boy. Sightings are also recorded on this website.

Final Thoughts

Nambour is a lovely small town and the collection of street art is wonderful. The local parks and Petrie creek are nice place to visit. I'd recommend visiting Muffin Whole cafe as they make a great coffee and have a cool selection of local art for sale.

  1. This is awesome - a place with so many great murals. Especially like that black and white one of old Nambour saw mill. The big pineapple made me smile - and that picture with it next to alien and ufos is hilarious :D
