Colourful Elmore

Swimming with Colour

Elmore is a small regional North Victorian town nested in the traditional lands of the Dja Dja Wurrung people. I had wanted to visit the town for awhile now to see the colourful mural designed by artist Mimi Leung (@mimileungyeh) located on the local swimming pool on Elmore-Raywood road. The mural features australian animals and colourful bush backgrounds.

Sunshine Harvester

Elmore is known as the home of the sunshine harvester as it was invented by Australian industrialist Hugh Victor McKay in 1885. The sunshine harvester was a strip harvester and revolutionised wheat harvesting around the world. There is a rural centre in Elmore dedicated to the history of the harvester and has great displays.

Campaspe River

The Campaspe river runs through Elmore and is a lovely relaxing walk. The river and bush land were culturally significant to the local Dja Dja Wurrung clans. Platypus and other local wildlife have been spotted within the river.

Historic places

A number of historic buildings and heritage locations are found though out the town below are a few I saw. There is also a miniature railway and local museum near the railway but was not open when I was there.

Elmore Memorial Hall

Former Elmore water tower

Historic church: Our Lady Of The Sacred Heart Catholic Church 1904

Old signs of the Elmore pharmacy

Former Railway building part of Elmore Progress Association

Tragic Past

As I originate from a town that is famous for a historic ghost Frederick Fisher who was sadly murdered by William George Worrall in 1886 in the town of Campbelltown New South Wales.  Read more about the history here. Elmore has a similar tragic story of a local called John Duggan  or known as Corky Jack (as he originated from Cork in Ireland). Sadly he was murdered and robbed by William Harrison in 1888. The town has a lovely tribute to Corky Jack outside the rural discovery centre. A headstone is also within the local cemetery. You can read more about the case here.

Final Thoughts

Elmore is a lovely small town, I'd recommend walking around the river and visiting the rural discovery centre. The local bakery is a nice spot to stop for a tasty pie too.
