Platypus at Porepunkah

 Punka

On my way to Bright we passed by a small town called Porepunkah or known as Punka to the locals.  It is known as the meeting of the waters in the local First Nations language. As we passed the local primary school at 2 Martley street I saw a beautiful mural featuring native flora and fauna, including a platypus. The mural was created by Lauren Green (@lozzzgreen)  As the town was only a short trip away from Bright I got a shuttle transfer to there to capture the delightful mural. Porepunkah is located North of Bright Victoria within the Alpine Region of Australia and on the lands of the traditional custodians Taungurung and Gunaikurnai people.

 Youth Mural

Another mural is located on the toilet block beside the Ovens River. This features a collection of native birds and cartoons. It was created by local Youths from surrounding towns as part of the Victoria and Alpine Shire Council.

Final thoughts

Porepunkah is a lovely town. The fresh Alpine air and scenic views are lovely.  I recommend visiting in winter as although it is peak season due to the snow (Mt Hotham) the crisp air is great for walks around the river.
