Canberra Miniature Railway Adventures

Platypus Express

I visited the suburb of Symonston located in the capital city of Australia Canberra.  Symonston is located on the lands of the Ngunnawal (Ngunawal) and Ngambri people. Located within Symonston at 501 Jerrabomberra Ave is the Canberra miniature railway. The Canberra miniature railway offers miniature locomotives rides to the public. It is a volunteer organisation as part of the Canberra Society of Model and Experimental Engineers INC. They aim to keep the love of trains alive with the opportunity to ride miniatures of real working trains. It runs it's events on 2nd and last Sunday of the month and has special events and party booking options as well you can learn more here. There are a number of nature themed murals around the platforms and it is decorated with toys and statues. It's a great place for all ages. There is also a canteen on the day that serves food and drink.

Stylized Impact Murals

Beautiful murals inspired by the nearby Jerrabomberra Wetlands and Australia fauna are decorated around the railway. Statues and soft toys are also adorn the place too.

Trains

They run a selection of trains some featuring smaller locomotives and some larger. It was a fun day and was lovely to see the passion and sense of community that the train volunteers have. The trains run on petrol, but there are also stream powdered one that I was luckily to see and ride on a Little Giant named George named after the company George England & Co.

Final Thoughts

Canberra Miniature Railway is a great day out and they offer some tasty food and drinks so it is well worth a visit. It is located a fair bit out from Canberra main CBD so public transport is not the most reliable however the 56 and 902 buses run to the nearby suburb of Narrabundah and then its about a 30 min walk to the miniature railway from there.
